KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's tennis team opened its 2019 spring schedule sweeping the University of Illinois at Chicago with two 7-0 victories on Sunday, Jan. 13 at West Hills Athletic Club.Â
Western Michigan 7, UIC 0 (Match One)
The Broncos began 2019 dual-match play on the right foot, sweeping the Flames. WMU swept doubles to go up 1-0 and won all of its singles matches.
The duo of Jannik Opitz and Lenhard Haupt took care of business quickly with a 6-1 victory at the No. 3 position. The No. 2 doubles team of Kennosuke Nouchi & Nick Schnobel won 6-3 to secure the doubles point. Peter Kuszynski/Jack Randall followed with a 7-6 (4) win.
After wins at No. 1 and No. 5 singles by Opitz and Kuszynski, a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6 by Nick Schnobel sealed the win for Western Michigan as they went up 4-0. Haupt, Matej Svjetlicic, and Randall finished out the match with victories.
Western Michigan 7, UIC 0 (Match Two)
WMU followed suit in the second match with some minor lineup changes. Opitz and Haupt moved into the No. 2 doubles spot and made quick work of Wasilewicz/Wale 6-1. The pairs of Nouchi/Schnobel and Kuszynski/Randall also improved to 2-0 on the day to give the Broncos another doubles sweep.
The freshman duo of Randall and Kuszynski put WMU up 3-0 early into singles competition, followed by an Opitz victory at No. 1 for the match-clinching point. Haupt, Nouchi, and Svjetlicic then followed with wins to give the Brown & Gold their second sweep of the day.Â
"We played a lot of tennis today and had some solid results against a good UIC team," said head coach Dave Morin. "We'll continue to work on different areas of our players' games as we prepare for next weekend."
