Bronco Softball Duo Travels to Australia with Beyond Sports

KALAMAZOO, Mich. –  The Western Michigan softball duo of Mackenzie Swinehart and Brooke Wyman had the opportunity of a lifetime this summer after being selected by Beyond Sports to play in Australia from June 11-22.

"I can't even put into words how amazing this experience was," commented Wyman. "The softball was flat out fun and I made so many memories doing what I love to do in such a beautiful country. I would do it again in a heartbeat."

Beyond Sports was established in 2010 and has grown to become the world leader in international sports tours. They create opportunities for both United States student-athletes, international athletes and international youth to enjoy a life-changing cross-cultural experience through sport.

Both Wyman and Swinehart were nominated to be a part of this experience by WMU head coach Kathy Leitke after the two helped the Broncos finish 29-25 overall and make an appearance in the Mid-American Conference Tournament as the No. 5 seed. The shortstop Wyman batted .328 during the season and notched six doubles, one triple and four home runs to go along with 28 RBIs. Swinehart, the right fielder, hit .358 in 52 games during her sophomore campaign. At one point during the season, Swinehart held a team-high 11 game hit streak and notched seven doubles, one triple and 14 RBIs during the course of the year. She also was second on the team with 31 runs scored.

The Bronco duo played alongside student-athletes from Butler, Southeast Missouri, Illinois, Hofstra and Bowling Green all while playing a total of four games during the 12-day trip. The opponents were made up of players ranging from professional pitchers to other Aussie players that tried out for the teams. The head coach for the trip was Georgetown softball assistant coach Chelsey Broermann as the team played one game in Sydney and three in Brisbane.

"This trip was an amazing experience and I really enjoyed getting to know more student-athletes from the US that go through the same things we do," added Swinehart. "My game, especially my hitting game, improved when I was down there and I learned so much playing with the other girls. I also feel like my mental game got better and I really want to focus on these things coming into next season."

In addition to softball, the Australian adventure included exploring the city and breathtaking landscapes and discovering unique wildlife.  While on the trip, Wyman celebrated her 21st birthday by holding kangaroos and koalas. Other adventures that the Bronco duo encountered were surfing and sightseeing that was highlighted by the Sydney Opera House.
