Broncos Drop Two Contests in Day One of the USF Under Armour Tournament

CLEARWATER, Fla.- In the first of day of the USF Under Armour Tournament, the Western Michigan softball team began the 12-game trip falling to College of Charleston, 9-3, before dropping a heartbreaker to host USF with a final score of 6-5. The Broncos' record moves to 5-8 overall and the team will lokk to bounce back with two games tomorrow.

Sophomore Mackenzie Swinehart and freshman Samantha Coffel led the Bronco batters on Friday as the pair both went 4-for-7 with an RBI over two games. Seven other WMU players accounted for hits including Brooke Wyman who went 3-for-6 with an RBI. Aspen Williams drove in a team-high three runs.

In the first game, College of Charleston took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third before doing most of its damage in the fifth and seventh innings. Trailing 5-0 in the bottom of the third, the Broncos mounted a comeback off three runs to trail by just two before the Cougars closed out the game with four runs in the top of the seventh.

Freshman pitcher Sydney Stefanick took the loss in relief, allowing six runs (two earned) and seven hits while striking out one over 2.0 innings. Starting pitcher Anissa Sanchez threw the first 4.1 solid innings for the Broncos, allowing just two hits that led to three runs (one unearned) and notching three strikeouts.

In the nightcap the Broncos dropped a heartbreaker to host team USF, 6-5, despite hitting a season-high 14 hits. Western Michigan got things started early with two runs in the first inning as Swinehart and Wyman came across the plate. The Bulls broke through starting pitcher Holly VanTilburg in the fourth to even the score off a two-run home run over the left field wall. The Broncos responded and regained the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh to pull ahead 5-2. Relief pitcher Jordan Kurth found herself in a jam in the final half inning as the Bulls capitalized on three runs to seal the victory.

Kurth was charged with the loss as she was touched for four runs on four hits in 2.2 innings. In her third start VanTilburg pitched the first 4.1 innings allowing five hits and two runs all while striking out three.

The Broncos face Wisconsin tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. and Wright State at 3 p.m.
