Four Broncos Crowned Flight Champions at MAC Invite

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team concluded the 2018 Mid-American Conference Invitational with the final rounds of singles at West Hills Athletic Club on Sunday, Nov. 11, wrapping up the fall season. 

For the second consecutive season, the Brown & Gold recorded four singles titles. Jannik Opitz, Zac Faveri, Peter Kuszynski, and Nick Schnobel were all crowned champions in their respective singles flights on Sunday. 

Lenhard Haupt, Kennosuke Nouchi, Opitz, and Schnobel were singles champions in the 2017 MAC Invite.  

As a team, the Broncos went 21-8 on the weekend during singles competition. 

"We had a very good fall season as a team and finished on a high note at the MAC Invite," said head coach Dave Morin. "Our young players made tremendous strides and with our upper class leading the way we're very excited about the upcoming dual match season."

Jannik Opitz won flight one singles, defeating Ludovico Cestarello 6-0, 6-4 after wins over opponents from Buffalo and Toledo.

Faveri was crowned the flight three champion. Zac won matches against opponents from Northern Illinois and Toledo in the first two rounds prior to defeating Bor Schweiser Muzar from NIU 7-5, 6-4 in the finals.

In flight four, Kuszynski defeated opponents from Toledo and Ball State to reach the finals. He won 6-4, 7-6(5) over Chris Adams for the title.

Flight six was an All-Bronco showdown between Nick Schnobel and Kennosuke Nouchi, with Schnobel prevailing 6-2, 6-3.

In addition, Haupt and Matej Svjetlicic earned third place finishes, while Eric Olivarez won a consolation final in their respective flights.

The Broncos finished doubles play on day one of the tournament on Friday, Nov. 9, going 8-6. The duo of Schnobel and Nouchi were the champions of flight one. 

Concluding the tournament, the Broncos have finished up play in the fall. They return to action on Jan. 14, 2019 with a pair of matches against Illinois Chicago and Detroit Mercy at home inside West Hills Athletic Club.
