OXFORD, Ohio- The Western Michigan softball team dropped its opening doubleheader of Mid-American Conference play on the road at Miami Friday. The Broncos lost by a 4-0 score and then 8-6 in the nightcap.
The Broncos were held to just three hits in game one. Redshirt junior
Marlee Wilson doubled while
Aspen Williams and
Mackenzie Swinehart singled.
The Broncos got off to a great start in game two, taking a 5-0 lead after one inning of play. Senior
Ivy Schaaf led off with a double to right center.
Kelsea Cichocki added to her Mid-American Conference best RBI total with her 28th RBI of the year on a sac fly later in the inning. She added a solo home run, hitting her team-leading fifth home run of the season in the fourth.
Williams kept WMU going in the first inning ,crushing her second home run this season, hitting out a two-run blast that put WMU up 3-0. Sophomore
Brooke Wyman followed in the next at bat with her first collegiate home run, knocking a ball out over the left center fence.
Miami switched pitchers and held WMU to four hits the rest of the game. Williams hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth to give the Broncos their fifth and final run. After scoring one run in the second, Miami pushed three runs across in the fourth inning and pulled off the victory, scoring four in the fifth.
Western Michigan and Miami conclude this Mid-American Conference opening series at noon, March 25.
