MUNCIE, Ind. – The Western Michigan softball team split a doubleheader at Ball State on Friday afternoon. The Broncos took game one 6-4 but fell 7-6 in the second game.
WMU improved to 21-18 overall and 8-6 in the Mid-American Conference.
GAME ONE
The Broncos jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Marlee Wilson and Jenna Faultersack both got on base before Kaylen Glenfield launched a three-run home run to put WMU on the board. The home run was Glenfield's fifth of the season and pushed her RBI total to 18. The Cardinals go two back in the bottom of the second on a two-run home run by Danae King.
Freshman Samantha Coffel pushed WMU's lead to 4-2 with a solo home run in the third inning. Faultersack led off the fourth inning with a double and advanced to third after a single by senior Aspen Williams. She then scored on a wild pitch to give the Broncos a 5-2 advantage. BSU scored two a home run by Kennedy Wynn in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 5-4. Faultersack scored her third run of the game in the top of the six on a Ball State error to push the lead to 6-4, with the Broncos keeping the Cardinals off the board in the sixth and the seventh innings to earn the win.
 Jordan Kurth went the distance and struck out six to improve to 8-3. Faultersack finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate with game-high three runs scored.
GAME TWO
Western Michigan slowly dug itself out of a hole in game two after giving up four runs in the first inning. Coffel scored on an error in the third to cut the lead to 4-1. The Cardinals got one back in the bottom of the third before Geordin Craun scored on a throwing error and Brooke Wyman drove Logan Carter in to bring WMU within two, 5-3. Ball State responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-3 lead.
Coffel smashed her second home-run of the day, this time driving in three in the top of the six to tie the game up at 6-6. BSU's Haley Dominique drove in the game-winning run with a RBI double in the bottom of the sixth.
Mackenzie Swinehart and Brooke Wyman each had two hits to lead WMU in game two, while Coffel went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and her third home run of the season. Holly VanTilburg started the game, with Sydney Stefanick striking out a game-high six batters in five innings of relief work.
The two teams complete the series on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Â Â Â
