Softball Takes Series at Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. – After splitting a doubleheader on Friday, the Western Michigan softball team rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to win at Ball State, 4-2, to take the series against the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon.

Four different Broncos drove in runs on the day, while Jordan Kurth pitched seven innings and struck out seven to improve to 9-3 on the season. WMU is now 22-18 overall and 9-6 in the Mid-American Conference.

BSU scored in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead but Western Michigan responded in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman Coffel doubled to right field to drive in sophomore Mackenzie Swinehart to tie it up at 1-1. The RBI was Coffel's fifth of the weekend and the double was her 13th of the season. Marlee Wilson then singled to center field to drive in Jenna Faultersack to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead.

The Cardinals tied it up in the bottom of the fourth after a RBI triple by Stacy Payton. WMU retook the lead, 3-2, in the top of the fifth on a RBI single by Junior Brooke Wyman to drive in senior Aspen Williams. Faultersack homered, her third of the season, to left field in the top of the sixth inning to extend the lead to 4-2. Kurth took control of the game from there and didn't allow a hit in the final two innings to seal the win.

Western Michigan travels to Notre Dame on Tuesday at 5 p.m. before hosting Toledo on the weekend.
