No. 12 Ranked Broncos Defeat No. 22 Michigan in Front of Record Crowd

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The nationally No. 12 ranked Western Michigan men's soccer team defeated No. 22 Michigan, 1-0, in front of a record crowd of over 2,300. The Broncos broke the tie in the 51st minute with a goal scored by junior midfielder Kosti Moni.

This was WMU's first time being ranked and hosting another ranked team. It was one of the biggest games in program history and the community of Kalamazoo came out to support in record numbers. A record crowd of 2,317 came to watch WMU defeat Michigan.

"We thought heading into the game we could get some looks at goal on set pieces and that's how we got our goal," WMU head coach Chad Wiseman said. "We have a lot of respect for Michigan, their coaches and players. They are a top program, hosting them in Kalamazoo is great for college soccer."

WMU had several opportunities in the first half to take the lead but it wasn't until the second half where the Broncos got on the board. The game-winning goal came in the 51st minute by Moni off a corner kicke taken by the Broncos was headed by junior defender Ben Thornton to Moni who slid in at the far post for the goal.

"The first half we had very few chances and neither team really was finding a flow," Wiseman. "The second half I thought we started to get into some dangerous areas of the field. After the goal we had two or three really good opportunities to find the second.

"We held Michigan without a shot on goal for 90 minutes. All I can say is wow. All the credit has to go to these players and my assistants - Josh, Marc and Shane did an unbelievable job today with our adjustments. They were spot on."

With the win today, the Broncos have now posted two top-25 wins on the season. WMU will have several more opportunities to add to this total in the coming weeks with a big game against No. 6 Michigan State on Oct. 4.

"What an atmosphere," Wiseman added. "The athletic department, student body, community came out in big numbers today I'm so appreciative of the support they have for this team."

The Broncos' next game is away at University of Maryland Baltimore County on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.
