McIntosh Goal Propels WMU Past Dayton

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan men's soccer team ended alumni weekend on a high note with a 1-0 victory over Dayton this afternoon. Game-winning goal was scored in the 22nd minute by senior forward Jay McIntosh.

"A shutout victory is a great way to end alumni weekend." head coach Chad Wiseman said. "Dayton is big and athletic with a couple of tricky players who run off their target. For the most part we handled what they threw at us. Our backline and goalkeeper Drew Shepherd had solid performances today."

A defensive battle throughout the first half was broken once McIntosh found the back of the net in the 22nd minute. Redshirt freshman Mitch Herried lobbed a ball over the top of the defense to McIntosh leading to an open shot on goal. This was McIntosh's second goal of the season and it was Herried's second assist of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Drew Shepherd recorded his fourth shutout of the year off of three saves. The Bronco defense limited the number of chances the Flyers had on goal all day.
WMU outshot Dayton 19-7 and also had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

"I wanted to thank all the alumni and friends for coming to Kalamazoo this weekend. A fun weekend for all involved! We appreciate their support, engagement and enthusiasm for our program. We'll continue to strive to do our best to make them proud!"

Western Michigan will host No. 18 Michigan at the WMU Soccer Complex Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 5 p.m. Admission to all home WMU soccer games is free.

"Michigan Wednesday! What else needs to be said? We have two top 20 teams in the country competing right here in Kalamazoo. Let's get out in massive numbers. There won't be a better game in the entire country!"
