TOLEDO, Ohio- The Western Michigan softball team defeated Toledo 9-4 on the road Saturday to win this weekend's three-game Mid-American Conference series two games to one. The Bronco and Rockets split a doubleheader on Friday.
Western Michigan pounded out 13 hits in the series finale, scoring three runs in the second inning, four runs in the third and two runs in the fourth.
Senior
Ivy Schaaf batted 3-for-4 in the game with a walk, three RBIs and a run scored. Schaaf drove in a run with a single down the left line in the second inning and then drove in two with a double in the third. Schaaf is currently on a 12-game hitting streak, batting .447 over that stretch.
Freshman
Mackenzie Swinehart also went 3-for-4 with a walk and drove in two runs. Swinehart followed Schaaf's double in the third with a two-run single up the middle that put WMU up 7-1.
Courtney Sleeman drove in both of the Bronco runs in the fourth with a one-out, bases loaded single.
Aspen Williams and
Brooke Wyman both batted 2-for-3 and scored two runs each.
Junior pitcher
Anissa Sanchez earned her second win of the series, improving her record to 7-5 on the season. Sanchez worked five innings, striking out one. Reliever
Holly VanTilburg held Toledo scoreless over the final two innings, allowing only one hit.
Western Michigan has won five of its last six games and is now 9-12 in MAC play with a 21-25 record overall.
The Broncos head to Ann Arbor on Tuesday to face Michigan at 6 p.m. and close out the regular season with a three-game home series against Ball State, May 5 & 6.
