SILVER LAKE, Ohio – The Western Michigan golf team had its strongest round of the weekend, propelling the squad to a third place finish at the 2017 Mid-American Conference Championships at Silver Lake Country Club on Sunday.
The Broncos combined to shoot a 303 in the final round for a total of 922 (+58) on the weekend for their highest finish at a MAC Championship since 2009 when they also finished third. Kent State took the MAC Championship with an 875 (+11) and was followed by Northern Illinois at 909 (+45). Ohio finished tied with WMU.
"I am very proud of this team," exclaimed first-year head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. Not only finishing the season strong with today's round, but how they grew as golfers all year. This was a special team and this weekend was a great way to end a fantastic year."
Freshman Jasmine Chee shot a final round 74 and was named to the MAC All-Tournament team after finishing tied for fifth with a three-round total of 227 (+11). Chee finished tied for second in par five scoring at -1 and was tied for third with eight birdies. She is also the first WMU golfer to be named to the MAC-All-Tournament team since Melissa Beurmann in 2013 and just the fourth selection in program history.
Senior Anna Wilcoxson finished tied for 16th after shooting a 232 (+16). Fellow senior Kaitlyn Watkins finished not too far behind in a tie for 20th with a total of 234 (+18). Her final round as a Bronco was her pest of the tournament, shooting a 76 and moving up seven spots on the leaderboard. Sophomore Claire Hernandez and junior Julia Champion finished right next to each other. Hernandez als6o shot a 76 on the day to jump up to a tie for 23rd and a final total of 235 (+19). Champion finished just behind her in a tie for 26th after shooting a 77 for a three-round total of 236.
