SILVER LAKE, Ohio – The Western Michigan golf team suffered a setback in round two of the Mid-American Conference Championships, but remain in the top five heading into the final round on Sunday at Silver Lake Country Club.
The Broncos combined to shoot 310 on the day but slipped back to fifth place, sitting just two shots behind Akron in fourth place at 619 (309-310). Northern Illinois and Ohio are tied for second at 606, while host Kent State holds a commanding lead at 587.
"Round two didn't produce as many birdies as we needed today," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "We had a lot of good opportunities but just wasn't able to convert. We have 18 more holes tomorrow to continue our process and get those puts to drop."
Senior Anna Wilcoxson remains in the top 10 of the leaderboard, sitting in eight overall. Wilcoxson shot a 77 on the day for a two-round total of 151 and sits just four strokes out of second place. Freshman Jasmine Chee sits just two strokes back in 11th place after shooting a 78 for a total of 153. Kaitlyn Watkins, Julia Champion and Claire Hernandez all sit within a stroke of each other. Watkins is tied for 27th after shooting a 78 for a total of 158. Champion and Hernandez both sit tied for 29th at 159. Champion took five total strokes off of her second round compared to her first, shooting a 77 on the day.
The final round begins on Sunday at 8 a.m.
