SILVER LAKE, Ohio – The Western Michigan golf team sits in fourth place after the opening round of the 2017 Mid-American Conference Championships at Silver Lake Country Club on Friday.

WMU's five golfers combined to shoot 309, sitting five strokes back of Ohio and Northern Illinois for second place. Host Kent State leads the tournament with a total of 289.

"Today we left a few too many shots on the golf course," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "We got a little ahead of ourselves instead of staying more present. The good news is we have 36 holes of golf left and the team is excited to get back out there tomorrow."

Senior Anna Wilcoxson was the top finisher on the day, shooting a 74 (+2) for a two-way tie for fifth place. Freshman Jasmine Chee is just one stroke behind her with a 75 (+3). Chee sits tied for seventh with five other golfers. Wilcoxson was +1 on the day on par fours, tying her for best in the tournament so far.

Senior Kaitlyn Watkins and sophomore Claire Hernandez are both tied for 32nd after shooting 80's on the day. Junior Julia Champion shot an 82 to round out the scoring on the day.

Western Michigan is back at it on Saturday morning for the second round.
