CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Western Michigan softball team split its two games at the USF Under Armour Series Saturday. The Broncos dropped game one to Villanova, 5-2 and then bounced back with a 11-0 run-rule victory over the University of Hartford.
WMU jumped on the Wildcats in the top of the third as the Broncos batted through six and took a 2-0 lead. Villanova took the lead in the bottom of the third scoring three runs on four hits and one error. The Wildcats added two more runs in the fourth to extend their lead to 5-2. The Broncos were unable to push another run across the remainder of the game.
The Broncos had eight hits in the contest as
Kelsea Cichocki and
Ivy Schaaf both went two-for-three while catcher
Courtney Sleeman caught two runners stealing.
Skyler Sobeski pitched 2.0 innings giving up three runs on three hits receiving the loss.
Anissa Sanchez entered in the third inning on relief allowing two runs. Â
In game two, the Broncos' bats came alive as Western Michigan scored 11 runs in the five inning contest. Western Michigan's biggest inning occurred in the second with six runs on four hits. Cichocki went a perfect four-for-four increasing her batting average to .558. Freshman
Mackenzie Swinehart batted three-for-four against the Hawks while first baseman
Marlee Wilson added a team-high five RBI's.
Sophomore pitcher
Jordan Kurth threw a complete game to earn the win. The left hander allowed just one hit and walked two batters.
Western Michigan (6-9) returns to the USF Under Armour Series for one more game tomorrow, facing Fort Wayne at 1:45 p.m.
