CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Western Michigan softball team closed out the first weekend of the USF Under Armour Series with a 10-3 victory over Fort Wayne Sunday. The Broncos had 12 hits including a three-run home run by senior
Abby Stoner.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, the Broncos regained the lead with a four-run inning.
Marlee Wilson tied the ball game with a single between the third baseman and shortstop as
Ivy Schaaf came in for the run. With runners on first and third, Stoner sent a ball flying over the left center wall driving in three runs as the Broncos took a 4-1 lead into the top of the second.
Western Michigan pushed their lead in the second scoring six runs on eight hits batting through the lineup. Catcher
Courtney Sleeman started the inning with a double off the center field wall.
Ivy Schaaf,
Mackenzie Swinehart,
Kelsea Cichocki, Wilson, Stoner and
Jenna Faultersack all added hits in the second.
In the bottom of the third, sophomore pitcher
Jordan Kurth retired three straight batters including two strikeouts after walking the leadoff batter to keep the score 10-1. Fort Wayne added two runs in the fifth to extend the game. In the final inning, Kurth faced five batters as the game ended in a ground out to third baseman Cichocki. The left hander earned the win allowing just one run on two hits and one walk.
Stoner led all Broncos with three RBI's going two-for-three while Cichocki and Wilson had two RBI's apiece.Â
Western Michigan (7-9) will take a break from the USF Under Armour Series to face South Dakota State at 10 a.m. and Niagara University at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
