CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Western Michigan softball team went 2-0 on Friday, March 10 to begin the second weekend of the USF Under Armour Series. The pitching game for the Broncos highlighted the pair of victories as both sophomore
Jordan Kurth and junior
Anissa Sanchez pitched complete games. WMU defeated Central Connecticut State 2-0 and then went on to a 3-0 victory over Mount St. Mary's.
In game one, the Broncos got on the board in the top of the first when
Mackenzie Swinehart singled to left field driving in center fielder
Ivy Schaaf. The Blue Devils threatened in the bottom of the first off one hit but Kurth would end the inning off a strikeout. WMU added one more run in the seventh to seal the victory. The left hander Kurth ended her complete game allowing just three hits and striking out three.
Sanchez led the Broncos during the second game of day, pitching a complete shutout game and allowing seven hits. All three Bronco runs occurred in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded and with two outs, redshirt junior
Marlee Wilson doubled to left center field bringing in
Kelsea Cichocki, Swinehart and Schaaf. Mount St. Mary's threatened in the fifth and sixth innings but Sanchez was able to get out of the jam and preserve the victory.
Western Michigan (10-10) returns to the second weekend of the USF Under Armour Series for two more games tomorrow, facing Holy Cross at 9:15 a.m. and Yale at 11:30 a.m.
