YORKTOWN, Ind. – Program records fell as the Western Michigan golf team took third overall and senior Kaitlyn Watkins finished in second place at the Ball State Cardinal Classic at The Players Club golf course on Tuesday.
Watkins broke the program's 54-hole record by shooting a 214 to finish -2 and just three shots from first place. The team also broke the 54-hole record by shooting a combined 885. The previous team-low record was 887 set by the 2010 squad at the Pat Bradley Invitational. Watkins 214 broke her teammate and fellow senior Anna Wilcoxon's record of 222 set back in 2013 at the Nittany Lion Women's Invitational. Watkins shot a final round 69 to force her way into the record books.
"It was another great learning day for the team," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "Congratulations to Kaitlyn for her individual runner-up finish. I'm so excited for this team and the talent we have. Continuing to stick to our process and staying mindful through the day was key for us. We have great momentum going into East Lansing this weekend."
Along with Watkins, Wilcoxson also broke her personal 18-hole record after shooting a 69 to push her score down to a personal 54-hole best of 216 and even par for the tournament and a tie for fourth place. Freshman Jasmine Chee finished off her first collegiate tournament with an 80 to finish +10 and place tied for 19th. Julia Champion shot a final-round 78 to finish with a 229 and +13 to factor into the program record.
Western Michigan heads to East Lansing, Mich., for the Mary Fossum Invitational hosted by Michigan State on Saturday and Sunday.
