YORKTOWN, Ind. -- The Western Michigan golf team sits tied for second after the first two rounds of the Ball State Cardinal Classic at The Players Club golf course on Monday.
WMU sits +13 with a combined score of 589 and tied with Toledo heading into Tuesday's final round. Eastern Kentucky, the 2015 Cardinal Classic champions, sit in first place at +4 and a combined score of 580. The host Cardinals sit in fourth place at +20 and 569.
Senior Kaitlyn Watkins was WMU's top performer on the day, shooting an opening round 70 and a second round 75 to sit at +1 in fifth place. Freshman Jasmine Chee finished the first two rounds tied for eighth at +2 after shooting a 75 and a 71 in her first taste of collegiate competition. Senior Anna Wilcoxson sits right behind her tied for 10th with a +2 from an opening round 77 and a second round of 70.
"This team should be very proud of their effort and process today," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "Three of our five players in Kaitlyn, Jasmine and Anna found red figures on a long day, which gives us momentum heading into the final round tomorrow. We are looking forward to finishing strong as one team tomorrow, one moment at a time."
Junior Julia Champion sits tied for 24th at +7 after a first round 75 and a second round 76 to round out WMU's top performers.
The final round begins at 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning. The Broncos then have a quick turnaround and head to East Lansing, Mich., for the Mary Fossum Invitational.
