KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan golf team continues the 2016 portion of its season on Monday and Tuesday at the Rocket Classic at the Catawba Island Club in Port Clinton, Ohio.
WMU is part of a 14-team field that includes Ball State, Bradley, Bucknell, Central Michigan, Detroit, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Michigan, Fort Wayne, Green Bay, Illinois-Chicago, Indiana State, Loyola-Chicago and host Toledo.
"This team is excited for the fun challenge that is the Catawba Island Golf Club," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "I believe our mind-set sets us up to be successful here. Staying present and mindful of the process will yield positive results for us. This week is another great opportunity for this team."
The Broncos will play 36 holes on Monday, beginning at 9 a.m. Catawba Island is a par 72 course that measures out at 5,884 yards.
WMU has been off to a solid start with three top-five finishes through the first three meets. Western Michigan took third at the Ball State Cardinal Classic, tied for fifth at the Mary Fossum Invitational and then took third at the inaugural KZoo Classic. Individually, senior Kaitlyn Watkins has been the team's top finisher in every tournament, taking second at Ball State, tying for 16th with teammate Anna Wilcoxson at Michigan State and then tying for fourth at WMU's home meet.
Recently Julia Champion came on strong with a top-10 finish at the KZoo Classic and as WMU's second finisher.
The Broncos have one more meet in 2016 after the Rocket Classic. Western Michigan heads to Silver Lake, Ohio, for the Silver Lake Shootout at the home of the 2017 Mid-American Conference Championships.
