PORTAGE, Mich. – The Western Michigan golf team used a strong final day of competition at the KZoo Classic to move up and finish in third place after a combined score of 925 (+61) at The Moors Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon.
Eastern Michigan was crowned the champions after finishing at 896 (+49), followed by Ball State at 913 (+49), the host Broncos, and then a tie between Cleveland State and Ohio for fourth place at 931 (+67). OU's Hailey Hrynewich claimed the individual title after a three-round score of 215 (-1). EMU's Thelma Beck and Kesley Murphy finished tied for second at 225 (+9), while WMU's
Kaitlyn Watkins and Ball State's Kelsey sear finished tied for fourth at 225 (+9).
"This team continues to work hard every day to get better," said head coach
Elise Swartout-Mosher. "They are very talented and dedicated to continuing the process. We know we left some strokes on the course this week, but we are ready to refocus for our next event in Toledo."
This was the third time this season with Watkins as the top finisher for the Broncos. The senior shot a 75 in each of her three rounds for her second top-five finish of the season. Junior
Julia Champion was WMU's next-highest finisher, tying for ninth place after shooting a 228 (+12). Freshman
Jasmine Chee continued her strong debut campaign as she tied for 17th with a score of 235 (+19).
After struggling in the first round, senior
Anna Wilcoxson was able to chip strokes off her score over the next two round, ending it on a 76 to finish in 20th at 237 (+21). Wilcoxson also recorded the second hole in one in program history after sinking her tee shot on the par three 15th hole.
WMU is next in action on Monday, Oct. 10 for the opening rounds of the Rocket Classic, hosted by Toledo.
