KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan golf team sits in fifth place after two rounds of play at the KZoo Classic at The Moors Golf Club in Portage, Mich., on Monday evening.
After 36 holes the Broncos combined for a score of 617 (+41) on their home course. Eastern Michigan leads the tournament at 591 (+15), followed by Ball State at 604 (+28), Ohio at 607 (+31) and Cleveland State at 615 (+39) to round out the top five.
Individually Julia Champion and Kaitlyn Watkins both sit tied for seventh after shooting 150 (+6). Freshman Jasmine Chee sits tied for 20th at 156 (+12) and Anna Wilcoxson rounds out WMU's top four in 29th at 161 (+17).
"This team should be proud of having eight strokes of first round to finish the day," said Bronco head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "It's a great feeling to play our home course in front of some great spectators. We have an opportunity tomorrow to go out and be our best selves, one moment at a time."
Western Michigan did sit in sixth place after the first round, but was able to shave off valuable strokes to climb ahead of Bowling Green for fifth. Champion shot a second-round score of 73 (+1) to lead the way in the afternoon.
Overall Hailey Hrynewich leads the tournament after shooting a pair of 71's for 142 (-2). Eastern Michigan's Thelma Beck sits in second place at 144 (E), while Ball State's Kelsey Sear sits in third place at 147 (+3).
The final round begins at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
