Bronco Volleyball Downs Akron, 3-0

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan volleyball team has now won two of its last three matches as the Broncos defeated Akron 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-19) Friday night at University Arena.

In the first set, WMU (7-13, 2-5 MAC) trailed 1-0 to open, but rattled off six straight points to go up 6-1 and never trailed again in the set. Senior Nicole Kinser led the way in the first set with five kills while junior Sydney LeMay added four. LeMay and junior Olivia Kofie each finished with two block assists in the set.

In the second set, the Zips (5-14, 0-7 MAC) and Broncos went back-and-forth until WMU rallied and scored six straight points to take a 15-9 lead they would not surrender. LeMay had five kills in the set while senior Alysia Baznik, freshman Quiana Ware and Kinser all finished with three. Sophomore Mary Murphy finished with 16 assists in the set and added an ace.

Akron jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the final set, but the Broncos quickly erased the deficit using a 10-4 run in the middle of the set to help finish off the Zips. Kinser finished with six kills while LeMay had four and Ware added three.

Kinser led the way overall, finishing with 14 kills on 25 attempts for a .520 hitting percentage. LeMay had 13 kills while Ware had four and Kofie/Baznik each had four. Freshman Kathleen Reilly led with 14 digs while Mary Murphy had a game-high 40 assists. As a team, the Broncos hit .248 while the Zips finished at .031. The Broncos attack got stronger throughout the match, with the hitting percentage rising with each set.

WMU will host Buffalo on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at University Arena.
