PORT CLINTON, Ohio – The Western Michigan golf team and junior Julia Champion both sit at the top of the leaderboard after two rounds of play at the 2016 Rocket Classic at the Catawba Island Golf Club on Monday.
WMU combined to shoot a 36-hole score of 601 (+25) and sits six strokes ahead of second place Eastern Kentucky at 607 (+31). The host Rockets sit in third at 609 (+33). No other school in the 14-team field is within 10 strokes of the Broncos, who shot an opening round 300 and 301 in the second round.
Champion sits in first place on the individual leaderboard after shoot a 73 in both rounds for a total of 146 (+2). The Markham, Ontario, native was second in the field in pars with 28 and tied for third in birdies with five.
"This team showed great resilience today," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "Getting off to a good start and then finishing strong on a long 36-hole day says a lot about who this team is. Tomorrow is another great opportunity for them. We know we are at our best when we are present, and that's a mindset we are taking into the final round."
Senior Kaitlyn Watkins sits tied for seventh after shooting a 150 (+6), a 74 in the opening round and a 76 in the second round. Freshman Jasmine Chee is tied for 12th at 152 (+8) and is tied for first in the tournament in par three scoring at -1. Sophomore Claire Hernandez sits in a tie for 22nd after shooting an opening-round score of 76 and an in 80 the second round for a total of 156 (+12).
The final round begins at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
