Stephanie Smiley joined the Western Michigan basketball staff as the Director of Operations in August 2013. Smiley was a four-year standout (1999-02) and All-American point guard at Eastern Michigan while current WMU head coach Shane Clipfell was an assistant coach for the Eagles.

Smiley's responsibilities at Western Michigan include film exchange, travel coordination and assisting with community involvement.

Smiley was a three-time All-Mid-American Conference selection at Eastern Michigan and a Kodak All-American Honorable Mention as a senior in 2002. She was twice named First Team All-MAC and was MAC Freshman of the Year in 1999. The Eagles had a winning record each of her four seasons.

Smiley still holds Eastern Michigan’s record for career assists with 577 and is second all-time in rebounding with 784. She remains in the top five in career three-pointers (174), three-point attempts (435), three-point percentage (.400) and blocked shots (103), as well as in the top 10 in career scoring (1,401), field goals made (491) and games played (114). She was the first player in the MAC, male or female, to record 1,400 points, 700 rebounds and 500 assists in a career.

A native of Holt, Mich., Smiley entered the teaching profession after earning her degree from Eastern Michigan in 2004. She has served as a K-12 physical education teacher, middle school and high school athletic director, as well as a high school counselor.

For the past two seasons she has been the varsity girl’s basketball coach for the Kodiak Island Borough School District, leading her teams to a 32-20 record and a fourth place state finish in 2013, earning her 4A Alaska State Coach of the Year honors.

In addition to a bachelor of science from EMU, she also holds a master’s degree in education, school counseling, from the University of West Alabama. She had her jersey retired at Holt High School in 2004 and was inducted into the Holt High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.
