MAY 9: ARRIVE IN ISTANBUL

Istanbul Day 1

We were so excited to land in Istanbul around 4:15 pm! Upon arrival, we wasted no time in hopping off the plane, grabbing our bags, and getting to the bus in time to try and make the Sultans League Finals match played at the Burhan Felek Spor Kompleski. During the hour and a half drive, we were able to catch our first glimpses of Istanbul, which were highlighted by the Bosphorus Bridge, many beautiful mosques, and the unique Turkish architecture. The Bosphorus Bridge is the connecting route between Europe and Asia so we thought it was so cool to say we’d been on three continents in one day! We had a lot of time to look out the window while playing some games of Battleship and Connect 4 because of the traffic that comes with Istanbul’s large population of 19 million people! After finally arriving at the match, we grabbed a bite to eat outside the stadium at a side street vendor selling lamb sandwiches. Our first meal out of the country didn’t disappoint. Walking into the stadium was indescribable, as the match was sold out and both sides brought wild fans. The match was played between two of the top professional teams in the world, Fenerbahce and Eczacibasi, and the crowd was electric for both teams. We'll definitely be needing to bring that energy to Read Fieldhouse this upcoming fall!! Fenerbahce ended up on top in a tight 5-set match, so we cheered then followed the crowd outside to load the bus to get back to our hotel. Dinner came late because of the long match, so Domino’s was the easy and quick option! Ready to take on day two with a little less jet lag and a lot more volleyball!!!!

MAY 10: ISTANBUL

We woke up and started with breakfast. There were eggs, bread, different kinds of meat and cheeses, as well as different vegetables!!! After breakfast, we got on the bus to head over to Hagia Sofia for our first mosque tour! We were able to get head coverings for going into the mosque and as we walked in, we took our shoes off. Our tour guide explained the images on the walls, the history of the building, and what it was used for. Next, we walked over to the Blue Mosque and got to see all of the pretty blue tile on the walls. There were 22,000 blue tiles and 200 windows built in the building. After the Blue Mosque, we went to see important structures that were gifted from the Egyptians and were 2,500 years old. After that we got to go to Arasta Bazaar, which is a long strip of different stores! There were spices, jewelry, clothes, Turkish delights, purses, scarfs, towels, etc. Then we had lunch at a nice restaurant where we had grilled chicken, rice, vegetables, and bread! Once we ate, we got on the bus to go to our match at Eczacibasi Sport Hall. We went through warmups and stretches with them and then some hitting lines before we started playing. We played four sets and split them, 2-2. Once we were done playing and taking pictures with the team, they made dinner for us and we got to sit down and talk with the team! Some of them knew English so we were able to communicate some! We made a lot of new friends and didn’t want to leave! We eventually got back on the bus and got to our hotel to plan for tomorrow. Then some of us wanted to try their restaurants that made desserts so we went to a place called Mendels and got some delicious desserts to end our day!

MAY 13: TRAVEL TO ITALY

We started off our morning pretty early since we had to catch a flight to Italy! Our flight was only two hours, which felt extremely short since our flight here was around 10 hours. After we got off the plane and got our bags, we met our tour guides, Rebecca and Tati, who we love! Then we went to Padova to roam around and of course, to try Italian gelato!!! After walking around Padova we went to the hotel and got to experience and relax at the Hot Springs Spa. Following the spa was an amazing Italian dinner with tons of delicious food!

MAY 18: MILAN/LAKE COMO

VB Group Last Day

This morning we traveled to Lake Como to visit and see the beautiful scenery and lakeside view! George Clooney and some other celebrities even have a house there! We had time to sightsee and shop along the way. We stopped and had some delicious pasta for lunch and continued to walk around the beautiful city! We came back to the hotel to take a quick power nap to get ready for our LAST team dinner abroad! We took the tram to our last stop which was a yummy pizza place. Of course following dinner we had to stop and get a sweet treat of gelato. Pistachio was my personal favorite! After gelato it was straight back to the hotel to pack and try to get some shut eye before our very early wake up! What a great way to end our amazing trip!
