KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team continues Mid-American Conference play on Thursday night when it travels to Akron. The Broncos are 6-3-2 overall and 2-0-2 in MAC play. The game is set for 7 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
Western Michigan played to a draw with Ball State at the WMU Soccer Complex this past Sunday afternoon. The Broncos received goals from
Abby Werthman and
Madison Cotta. The draw moved WMU in a tie for third in the conference.
SPREADING IT AROUND
The Broncos have been an offensive power this season, and the entire team has chipped into that, with 10 different players having two points or more.
Jen Blitchok leads the way with 12 points on five goals and two assists, while
Abby Werthman is right behind her with nine (three goals and three assists).
Behind the two leaders,
Emily Pagett,
Reagan Wisser,
Jenna Blackburn and
Heidi Thomasma are each at five points or higher.
Drew Martin,
Madison Cotta,
Bria Telemaque and
Madi Canada are also multi-point scorers for the Broncos this season.
CREATING CHANCES
WMU has been opportunistic on offense, as they lead the league in goals per game.
You can't score if you don't shoot, and the Broncos aren't afraid to let it fly, as they lead the league in shots per game, averaging nearly 15 per game. Another aspect WMU has found some offense with is corner kicks. The Brown and Gold lead the conference, getting six corner kicks per game.
The Broncos have scored 19 goals this season and average 1.73 per game to lead the conference.
SCOUTING THE ZIPS
The Broncos have dominated the series, boasting an 18-1-3 record against the Zips. WMU is 6-1-2 all-time on the road versus Akron and is 9-0-1 against the Zips over the last 10 meetings. Akron's only win against the Broncos came back on Oct. 5, 2003.
Akron has struggled so far this season, dropping four games to open conference play. The Zips have been defeated by Buffalo, Kent State, Bowling Green and Northern Illinois by a combined margin of 6-1.
On offense, Emma King will be the one to watch, as she leads the team with three goals this season. Morgan Pentz and Katie Stafford have two goals this season as well.
Anna Simmons leads the team in shots with 21 total and 10 on goal, but she hasn't scored this season.
In net, Sara Bower is the top keeper for the Zips, as she enters the game with a 1-7-0 record, 2.13 goals against average and .691 save percentage.
