VANCOUVER, Canada – Western Michigan freshman defenseman Ronnie Attard became the 59th Bronco in program history to be selected in the National Hockey League Entry Draft after being selected 72nd overall in the third round by the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday afternoon.
Attard, who measures in at 6-foot 4, 205 pounds, will debut in the fall after a tremendous career in the United States Hockey League. Attard was recently named the USHL Player and Defenseman of the Year after shattering the league's record for goals in a season by a defenseman with 30. The Whitelake, Mich., native added 35 assists for 65 points, a Tri-City Storm franchise and USHL record for points in a season by a blue-liner. He finished his USHL career with 84 points on 41 goals and 43 assists in 144 career games.
Attard is the sixth Bronco to be drafted by Philadelphia and joins teammate Wade Allison, who the Flyers took in the second round of the 2016 draft. The Broncos will feature four draft picks on the 2019-20 roster, with captain Hugh McGing (St. Louis) and Mattias Samuelsson (Buffalo) joining Attard and Allison.
Attard is also the 11th Bronco to be selected in the NHL Draft since head coach Andy Murray took over the program in 2011.
