Box Score ANN ARBOR, Mich.- Western Michigan put up a good fight, but was outmatched by the No. 2 ranked team in the nation, falling at Michigan Tuesday, 8-0.
Michigan used leadoff walks in the first and second innings to open a 2-0 lead and went on to score a pair of runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings. It was the 11-straight victory for U-M, which improved to 22-2 on the year.
The Broncos faced 2015 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and Second Team All-American Megan Betsa. Betsa (9-1) struck out a season-high 14 batters and allowed just one hit.
Senior second baseman
Melissa Palmer was the Broncos' lone base runner in the game. Palmer drew a leadoff walk in the top of the first and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Betsa shut down the threat however with three swinging strikeouts.
Palmer broke up Betsa's no-hitter in the top of the sixth, cracking a two-out double to right center. It was Palmer's fourth double of the year.
Senior pitcher
Allyson Kus (6-7) took the loss, allowing six runs, five hits and seven walks over four innings. Western Michigan's record fell to 9-13.
The Broncos head south to Athens, Ohio this weekend to begin Mid-American Conference play, taking on the Bobcats in a three-game series. Friday's game one is scheduled for 4 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
