WMU Softball Earns Dramatic Split at Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio - Meredith Whitney fanned 12 batters in WMU's series opening, extra inning 2-1 loss at Toledo and the Bronco offense scores double digit runs for second time in 2012 in 11-3 win.

Whitney struck out 10 or more batters in a game in her second straight start but it wasn't enough as the Broncos fell to Toledo, 2-1 in eight innings, to open Friday's double header.  She now has 673 career Ks, needing just six more to pass Kent State's Brittney Robinson for fifth on the Mid-American Conference list.

WMU scored its lone run of the game in the second inning on Christina Pigozzi's RBI single to left field.  The Broncos and Rockets tied in hits with six apiece.

Western Michigan's offense came alive in the nightcap, scoring 11 runs on nine hits in six innings.  Diana Patterson hit her fourth home run of the season and fifth of her career.

Becca Shemberger picked up the sixth win of her freshman season, working 4.0 innings and striking out four batters.

Whitney recorded six RBIs in a game for the second time in her career, becoming the first Bronco to do so, going 2-for-4 at the plate, including her 17th career home run. All of Whitney's RBIs came on two swings of the bat.

In the fifth inning, with the bases loaded, she laced her 26th career double to left center field to clear the bases.  In the sixth, Pigozzi and Tara Buchanan walked to lead off the inning, setting the stage for Whitney's long ball over the left field wall.

Patterson, Whitney and Gracie Barstad all had two hits in the victory with Patterson driving in three runs and Barstad collecting one RBI.

Western Michigan continues its journey across Northwest Ohio against MAC East leader Bowling Green, which split with Northern Illinois on Friday, on Saturday and Sunday.
