KALAMAZOO, Mich. -? Western Michigan softball closed out its home season in fine fashion,
going 4-0 this weekend after defeating Central Michigan, 6-3 and 5-2,
on Sunday afternoon in front a packed crowd at Fran Ebert Field.
The Broncos entered this afternoon trailing the Chippewas, 3-2, in the bottom of the fourth inning of a game that was suspended due to lightening and rain on Saturday afternoon.? The extra time was beneficial for WMU as the Broncos ripped off four runs in that inning.? The two teams resumed play with runners on the corners and the first run crossed the plate three batters later on a bases loaded walk for Mandi Sayres.? Lexi Jager snapped out of her mini hitting slump with a three-RBI single to right center field to clear the bases.
Jager added another RBI in the first inning of game two to score Sayres who placed a double down the left field line in the bottom of the first inning.? WMU scored four more runs in the bottom of the third.? Barstad laid down a perfect bunt that came to a stop just in front of the plate, scoring Jager who led off with an infield single.? The Broncos picked a pair of unearned runs when Michelle Bendewald, who had three hits against CMU, and Amanda McBride plated the final run of the inning with a base hit to center field.? McBride hit .667 (6-for-9) against Eastern Michigan and CMU.
Meredith Whitney and Meghan Thomas picked up their 13th and sixth wins, respectively, in the circle.? Each went 2-0 this weekend with Whitney fanning 17 batters and Thomas working a pair of complete games.
Western Michigan heads to Columbus, Ohio for a doubleheader against nationally ranked Ohio State on Wednesday, April 29 (5/7 p.m.) before closing out the regular season on the road at Buffalo (May 1) and Kent State (May 2-3).
