CLEARWATER, Fla. - Western Michigan softball opened the first day of play at the 2009 Under Armour Invitational hosted by South Florida in Clearwater, Fla., with a 3-1 win against Robert Morris. The Broncos faced Boston University and fell to the Terriers, 4-0. Meredith Whitney and Lexi Jager each had multi-hit games against RMU, each going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Whitney's presence was felt in the batter's box as well as in the cirle against Robert Morris. Her first collegiate triple came with two outs in the top of the third inning. Lexi Jager reached on a fielding error as did Sarah Thomas to place a pair of Broncos on the base paths for Whitney. Both runners scored on her three bagger to put WMU ahead, 2-0.
The Broncos added a third run off the bat of Jager's first double of the season. Gracie Barstad led of the frame by reaching on RMU's third error of the game and advanced to second base on a ground out from Chelsea Westenburg. Barstad scored WMU's insurance run on Jager's double for her fifth run of the season.
Robert Morris collected just two hist against Whitney, who improved to 4-3 and dropped her team-leading ERA to 2.76 with the win. Her seven strike out perfomance gives her 48 on the season. The game was also her second shut out of the year and fourth complete game in seven starts.
RMU scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth when lead off hitter Jaci Timko led off with a walk and later scored on Brooke Panepinto registered an RBI single to left field.
Boston University pitcher Cassidy Hardy was in complete control in the afternoon game against WMU, recording the first no-hitter of her career in the Terriers' four-run victory.
Western Michigan has a rematch with Villanova in the final game of pool play before the bracket portion of the UA Invitational. The Wildcats took a 6-3 decision over the Broncos in last week's UCF Invitational. The game on Saturday takes place at 11 a.m.
