KALAMAZOO -- In the last two weeks of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Summer Circuit, members of both the Western Michigan men's and women's tennis team have performed well in preparation for the upcoming season.
At the most recent event completed July 30 at Indiana University, Ashley Moccia made it to the semifinals of the main draw in singles and advanced to the semifinals in doubles with Bronco newcomer Yumi Matsuto. Matsuto also won the consolation draw of the tournament held at Western Michigan July 21-23.
Another Bronco newcomer, Kazuya Komada, advanced to the men's main draw final at IU, including a defeat of top-seeded Jose Perdomo from Ball State. Komada won the doubles championship with R.K. Bacalla in a final where they beat Franco Mata of Florida Gulf Coast and WMU recruit Casey Cullen. Komada was able to exact revenge as Mata beat him in the singles final.
Bacalla advaced to the finals of the IU consolation draw after winning the consolation draw at WMU's event.
Bryan Norville made the semifinals in singles and doubles in the event at WMU, while Kevin Hayward and newcomer Michael Calderone also advanced to the semis in doubles at WMU.
