CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Broncos had their three-game winning streak snapped as the Hokies of Virginia Tech handed Western Michigan a 1-0 loss to close out the adidas Tournament in Clearwater, Fla.
WMU (6-6) collected four hits in the loss but had situations where a runner was on third base in the fourth and sixth inning but could not bring a run across the plate.
Kristi Strange led off the inning with a single to center field and Amanda Heckaman followed by reaching on a fielder's choice. Jenna Stuppy also reached on a fielder's choice and Heckaman safely reached second base on a throwing error. Becky Bartosz earned a walk to load the bases but Heckaman was thrown out at home on a Brittney Reist fielder's choice and Amanda McBride grounded out to end the inning.
Heckamand led off the sixth with a single through the left side and Sarah Thomas pinch ran, advancing to third base two batters later. She was also stranded when the final out of the inning was recorded on a fly out.
Virginia Tech (20-7) registered its lone run on a triple followed by a double in the fifth inning. Kyla Sullivan allowed just that one earned run, working a complete game and striking out six Hokies.
Western Michigan will face Oakland in a double header on March 28.
