TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - WMU shut down the defending NCAA national champion Wolverines, allowing just one run on five scattered hits. Michigan managed multiple hits in an inning only once. Lauren Fuller's two-run double held as Tricia VanDerSlik pitched six innings to pick up the win and Krysten Shumaker earned her first save of the season.
Fuller put Western Michigan (7-5) on the board in the bottom of the first with a two-out double to right field. He two-bagger scored Danielle Daughtry, who drew a walk, and Corey Andrzejewski, who pinch ran for Strange who followed Daughtry with a base hit up the middle.
Michigan (10-5) answered in the top of the second with a solo home run. After that the Wolverines were held to just four hits scattered over the next five innings. UM managed two hits in only inning the rest of the way, collecting two base knocks in the fifth inning. It was Michigan's only true scoring chance as the Wolverines left three on base.
VanDerSlik (2-3) hurled six innings, giving up just the one run on five hits. She was relieved by Shumaker who pitched a perfect seventh inning, striking out a pair of batters to earn the save.
