DeLAND, Fla. - Krysten Shumaker came through in the circle for the third time in three starts as she and a concerted team effort from the Bronco offense propelled WMU to a 4-1 win over Stetson Tuesday afternoon in the second game of a double-header. The Hatters took the opener of the double header, 5-0.
Shumaker (3-0) stepped into the circle after her Broncos (4-3) had fallen to the home team Hatters (10-3), 5-0, in game one. Her offensive counterparts gave her a one-run lead before she ever took the field. Kristi Strange doubled to left, scoring Danielle Daughtry after she reached on a walk to lead off the inning.
Stetson answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning but it would be the first and last time the Hatters crossed the plate as Shumaker gave up just three hits the rest of the way and struck out five batters during her seven innings of work.
Western Michigan added insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings when freshman Lauren Fuller homered to left for the first round-tripper of her career and Daughtry and Corey Andrzejewski each scored unearned runs in the top of the sixth.
In game one, Kyla Sullivan (1-1) took the loss as the Hatters blanked the Broncos despite giving up seven hits. Amanda Heckaman went 2-for-3 in the loss.
Western Michigan travels to Daytona Beach, Fla. to take on Bethune-Cookman in a double-header, beginning at 6:00 p.m. on March 1.
