Any win over a rival is great but a comeback win is even better. Brian Johnson submitted this entry and Sean Mulhearn discusses it in the latest #Waldo75 video.
In 1988, Kalamazoo seemingly closed down for the day as everyone headed to Waldo Stadium to watch the Broncos take on the Chippewas of Central Michigan. As the rivals walked into Waldo, they were greeted by 32,285 Brown and Gold fans, which was then a record crowd at Waldo.
The crowd known as Bronco Nation made a big difference and went home happy customers when WMU played the best game of the season against CMU. This game along with the record crowd is Day 59 on the greatest 75 moments in Waldo Stadium history.
“It was one of, if not the greatest moment at Waldo Stadium,” said Brian Johnson (1987-1990), former free safety. “It was a perfect afternoon for football and we routed them in front of a record crowd.”
In front of the then record crowd, WMU went on to trample over the rival Chippewas, 42-24.
Johnson along with the rest of the WMU defense was a key essential in giving the Broncos the win. The defense held CMU to no points in the second quarter and the Broncos rattled off 28 straight points to ultimately seal the victory. Eric Hoffman had a day he'll never forget recording 23 tackles and moving himself into second place all-time on the career tackles list at WMU. Paul Devries ended his day with three tackles for loss resulting in 14 yards and Joel Smeege forced his sixth fumble of the season, which broke a WMU record.
Quarterback Tony Kimbrough earned MAC Offensive Player of the Week honors by throwing for 241 yards and four touchdowns. Both Allan and Bruce Boyko had two touchdowns on the day. Running back Rob Davis added to the amazing offense day with 115 yards on the ground. All of the playmakers on offense resulted in 412 total offensive yards being put up on the CMU defense.
The win snapped a streak in which the Broncos lost the previous 10 out of 11 meeting against CMU.
One of the men responsible for the win over CMU and the 1988 MAC Championship was Sean Mulhearn. Mulhearn sat down this summer to discuss that moment and what made Waldo Stadium so special to him.
