CLEVELAND – Led by a pair of four-time honorees, Western Michigan landed a league second-most 17 selections on the 148-member 2019 Football Academic All-MAC Team announced by the conference office on Monday. Seniors
Luke Juriga and
Giovanni Ricci received their fourth career Academic All-MAC accolades while juniors
Mike Caliendo and
Spencer Kanz joined seniors
Stefan Claiborne,
Justin Tranquill and
Jon Wassink as three-time honorees.
The Broncos lead the conference in Academic All-MAC selections since 2017 with 53 total. WMU's 17 members of this year's squad were second to only Ball State's 20.
Following Ball State and Western Michigan were Toledo (15), Eastern Michigan (14), Kent State (14), Bowling Green (12), Miami (Ohio) (12), Central Michigan (11), Northern Illinois (11), Ohio (8), Akron (7) and Buffalo (7).
Joining Juriga, Ricci, Caliendo, Kanz, Claiborne, Tranquill and Wassink with multiple citations are two-time choices
Brett Borske,
Mark Brooks,
Dylan Deatherage,
Alex Grace and
Harrison Taylor. Western Michigan's first-time picks were
Cam Cooper,
Will McCabe,
Jake Moertl,
Tanner Motz and
Alex Mussat.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.20 or better cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
