CLEVELAND – On Monday the Mid-American Conference announced that Western Michigan baseball junior infielder
Connor Smith was named MAC Baseball Co-Player of the Week.
Over the weekend against Northern Illinois, Smith led the Broncos with a .571 batting average while also registering an on-base percentage of .600 and a slugging percentage of .571. Smith drove in four runs and scored two in the three-game series with the Huskies. In 14 plate appearances, Smith had zero strikeouts and defensively committed no errors.
In the series finale on Sunday, Smith had a historic day at the plate going 6-for-6 with one run scored and four RBIs. The junior infielder tied the program record for most hits in a single game, joining Adam Rosales, Jeff Thrams and Tim Frankhouse as the only Broncos to register a six-hit performance.
This season Smith is one of just 10 players in the NCAA to have a six-hit game and is the first Bronco to do so since Rosales back in 2005. The Midland, Mich., native leads WMU with a .333 batting average to go along with five doubles, one triple, one home run and 19 RBIs.
In the MAC, Smith ranks eight in batting average, third in hits and 12
th in RBIs. Currently Smith has reached base safely in a team-high 13 straight games.
