Gymnastics Duo Heads to NCAA Regionals Saturday

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The duo of junior Rachael Underwood and freshman Morgan Spence are headed to Columbus, Ohio on April 7 to compete in the 2018 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Central Regional. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. inside St. John Arena and hosted by Ohio State with six teams and other qualified individuals participating.

Underwood appears in her third postseason as the junior will participate as an individual specialist on the vault and floor for the Broncos. Her regional qualifying score on vault (9.830) and floor (9.885) pushed her to an at-large spot in the events as she finished tied for fourth and fifth in the Mid-American Conference. She also will serve as an all-around alternate on Saturday.

In her first season, Spence will compete as an all-around during Saturday's event after she became the first gymnast in program history to be crowned MAC Freshman of the Year since Kelsey Hood back in 2015. Spence was the only freshman to compete all-around in every meet this season, averaging a 38.658 score with a RQS of 38.950 good for eighth in the conference.

The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in St. Louis, Mo., April 20-21 which will be hosted by the University of Missouri, Columbia and the St. Louis Commission.

In addition, the event winners at each regional site will advance (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or an all-around qualifier.

The central regional will be streamed on BTN Plus/BTN2Go for free.
