Broncos Advance to MAC Championship Match with 4-0 Win over Ball State

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The No. 1 seeded Western Michigan men's tennis team defeated No. 4 Ball State 4-0 on Friday morning in the Mid-American Conference semifinals to advance to its fourth consecutive MAC Championship match. The Broncos, who are now winners of 10 straight, improve to 21-4 overall and will face the winner of No. 2 Buffalo / No. 3 Northern Illinois on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Broncos started out hot, grabbing the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The duo of sophomores Jannik Opitz and Kennosuke Nouchi earned a 6-4 win at one while senior Billy Heckman and Maik Steiner finished it off, winning 6-2 at No. 3 to improve their winning streak to four in a row.

In singles, Steiner earned his ninth straight victory with a quick 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 to put WMU up 2-0 over the Cardinals. Opitz followed behind at No. 2, winning 6-1, 6-3 for his 11th consecutive victory as it is also the longest activing winning streak amongst all Broncos.

Junior Lenhard Haupt served as the match clinching point as the transfer delivered a 6-2, 6-1 win on four and improve to 9-1 in his last 10 matches all while pushing the Broncos into the title match tomorrow afternoon. Matej Svjetlicic and Eric Olivarez both took the first set from their Ball State opponent and were winning in the second before the match was called.

Western Michigan, who defeated both the Bulls and the Huskies during the regular season, will look to bring home their 12th MAC Tournament title and first since the 2016 season on Saturday in Buffalo at 1 p.m. Admission to the match is free.
