NAPERVILLE, Ill., -- The Western Michigan golf team is holding steady in sixth place, while Julia Champion moved into a tie for eighth and Jasmine Chee moved into a tie for 12th as the Broncos wrapped up day two of the Mid-American Conference Championship at Naperville Country Club on Saturday.
After shooting a 75 to open the tournament, Champion shaved a stroke off and shot a 74 for a two-round total of 149 (+5). Kent State's Pimnipa Panthong maintained her lead and sits at 139 (-5) heading into Sunday's final round. Chee opened with a 77 and took three strokes off to finish with a 74 and a total of 151 (+7).
The Broncos went from shooting an opening round of 318 to a 303, the third-best team score of the second round, and sit at 621 (+45). WMU is just five strokes behind Akron and seven behind Eastern Michigan in fourth place. Kent State leads the tournament at 567 (-9).
"We played much more like ourselves today," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "Good decision making and deliberate process led to more birdies for us. Tomorrow is about seeing how strong we can finish."
Freshman Cameryn Lucia jumped 13 spots from the opening round. Lucia shot a 75 for a two-round total of 159 (+15). Junior Claire Hernandez also improved, moving up four spots on the leaderboard after shooting an 80 for a total of 167 (+23). Freshman Megan Watkins also sits tied with Hernandez.
The final round begins on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. ET.
