KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Junior Melina Lyubomirova earned her tenth consecutive victory for the Western Michigan women's tennis team on Friday afternoon but it wasn't enough as the Broncos fell 4-3 to the Miami Redhawks. The match, which was the first contest outside in Kalamazoo for WMU, drops the Broncos to 11-12 overall and 2-5 in the Mid-American Conference. The loss was only just the second all season at home for WMU as they are now 9-2 in Kalamazoo.

The Redhawks got things started by clinching the doubles point at No. 1 and No. 3. From there, Miami pulled ahead 3-0 with victories at the one and six spots. Redshirt senior Barbare Eristavi snapped her two-match winning streak at No. 1, falling 6-0, 6-1 to her Miami opponent while freshman Valentina Sanchez Brined dropped her contest at six with a score of 6-1, 6-2.

Lyubomirova pulled the Broncos within two after defeating her opponent 6-4, 6-2 at two and improved her winning streak to 10, her longest winning streak all season. The Redhawks would respond and clinch the match at four as Jeryn Jack suffered the loss at No. 4. Sophomore Gabriela Slavova got back in the win column with an impressive win at No. 5, defeating Lena Babunski 6-4, 6-3.

To wrap up the day, Junior Denise Azcui had a battle at No. 3, after dropping the first set 7-6(5) she took her opponent to another tie breaker in the second set to 7-6(5) and force a third set. She then battled from being down 5-1 to win the third set 11-9 and pick up her fifth conference singles victory.

Western Michigan has just one regular season contest left which is slated to take place this Sunday, April 22 in Kalamazoo on the Sorensen Courts. Prior to the match, the Broncos will honor lone senior Eristavi for Senior Day.
