KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan golf team heads to Naperville, Ill., and Naperville Country Club for the 2018 Mid-American Golf Championship on Friday-Sunday.
WMU will compete against its conference rivals in the 10-team field. The course runs 6,092 yards and is a par 72.
Last season the Broncos tied the program's second-best finish after tying for third place. WMU's highest-ever finish came in 2004 with a second place finish. Kent State has won the MAC Championship every single year since the tournament was first held in 1999.
"We know all our hard work and practice throughout the seasons has us prepared for this weekend," said second-year head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "Naperville Country Club is a great golf course that takes a solid game plan. There are plenty of birdie opportunities on multiple holes. For us, it will be about deliberately executing our process to put ourselves in good positions on the course."
Due to expected frost, the first round will not begin until 11 a.m. ET. Freshman Megan Watkins will be the first to start, teeing off at 11:50 a.m. Classmate Cameryn Lucia will start at noon, followed by junior Claire Hernandez at 12:10 p.m. Sophomore Jasmine Chee, who became the third Bronco in program history to earn MAC All-Tournament Team honors last season after finishing tied for fifth, starts her MAC Championship opening round at 12:20. Senior Julia Champion rounds out WMU's field with a 12:30 start.
Champion, who has been a medalist three times in the past two seasons, has been Western Michigan's most consistent performer on the season, with a team-low average of 75.45. Her best 54-hole performance came at the Shirley Spork EMU Invitational, where she claimed the tournament win with a 218., matching her career low.
No rain is scheduled for the tournament, with temperatures predicted to be in the mid-50's.
