Both seniors played a big role for the team last weekend to help the Brown & Gold go 2-0 after defeating Binghamton and Buffalo to clinch the No. 1 seed in the upcoming MAC Tournament. With the pair of victories, the Broncos also clinched a share of the regular season title, the 24th in program history and ninth under head coach
Dave Morin.
Steiner has been the prominent number one player for WMU this season as the senior boosted his record to 27-9 overall and 14-5 this spring at No. 1 with two wins. Steiner defeated both of his MAC opponents in three sets to push his winning streak to seven.
Heckman and Steiner improved their spring record to 4-1 together with a pair of victories this weekend at No. 3. They began by defeating Binghamton's Cestarollo/Bouchet 7-5 before taking a 6-2 victory over Nittolo/Johnson from Buffalo.
The Broncos have owned the conference weekly awards during the 2018 season as this week's honors make that number nine and 10 for the team. Steiner has won the singles award four times and is one of three other Broncos to be tabbed singles player of the week. Heckman joins five teammates, including Steiner, to garner the doubles team of the week honor.
Western Michigan, who is 19-4 overall and remains the only unbeaten team in the MAC with 6-0 record, takes its eight-match winning streak into the final regular season contest this Saturday, April 21 in Toledo, Ohio. The matchup between the Broncos and the Rockets is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
