KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's tennis team picked up its fifth straight win, and second in the Mid-American Conference, after taking down Easter n Michigan 4-3 at West Hills Athletic Club on Sunday afternoon.
The Broncos (11-7, 2-0 MAC) took the early lead after winning the doubles point. Denise Azcui and Jeryn Jack defeated EMU's Giuliana Ansaloni at the No. 2, 6-0. Barbare Eristavi and Valentia Sanchez Briend handled the Eagles' No. 3 team of Andera Martiovska and Anna Veleva, 6-2.
Eastern Michigan tied the match up at 1-1 with Natalie Regalado defeating Sanchez Briend at the No. 6, 6-0, 6-0. The Broncos retook the lead after Kajta Fevralev defeated Ansaloni 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4. The lead extended to 3-1 after Azcui beat Anna Veleva 6-1, 6-2. Western Michigan secured the win thanks to junior Melina Lyubomirova's win at No. 2 over Marie Mayerova. Lyubomirova won in two sets, 6-3, 6-3.
"Today was a total team effort," said head coach Ryan Tomlinson. "We played great doubles once again and it set the tone early. We competed hard today and that was the great difference. It doesn't get any easier, we have two tough road tests next weekend to get ready for."
Eristavi fell at No. 1 to EMU's Ani Gogvadez. The two traded sets but then settled the match in a tie-breaker, with Gogvadze winning 10-5. The Eagle's Andrea Martinovska also defeated Jack 6-4, 7-5 after the match was decided.
The Broncos head on the road and travel to Akron on Friday to battle the Zips at 1 p.m. They continue their road trip and head to Buffalo on Sunday for another 1 p.m. start.
