Broncos Fall to Georgetown, 9-5 at the Snowbird Classic

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Western Michigan baseball saw its five-game win streak come to an end on Wednesday as the Broncos fell to Georgetown, 9-5 at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla.

The Broncos who had won six of their last seven games, tallied 10 hits on the day while scoring five runs. Junior Nate Grys went 3-for-5 and collected his first triple of the season on a ball to deep right center field.

Grys blasted his Mid-American Conference leading seventh double of the season off the left field fence as heavy winds kept the ball in the ballpark. Fellow junior Jimmy Roche had a productive day at the plate as well going 2-for-5 with two RBIs against the Hoyas.

With the loss, the Broncos move to 6-5 on the season and 4-1 in the sunshine state. Western Michigan will have Thursday off before taking on Georgetown once again on Friday, March 9 with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 PM.

In a mid-week game, the Broncos sent out seven pitchers to the mound against the Hoyas. The WMU pitching staff accumulated seven strikeouts on Wednesday while only walking three. The Hoyas scrapped together 15 hits with just one extra-base hit.

The Broncos got on the board first in the first inning after leadoff batter junior Conner Henderson, was hit by a pitch. Henderson then stole his sixth base of the year and two batters later Grys roped a single that brought Henderson home and gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead.

WMU extended its lead to 3-0 in the third when junior Jesse Forestell reached base on a single with one out.  A Grys double positioned runners at second and third for Roche who singled back up the middle to score Forestell. Grys came home to score on the next batter to give WMU the early advantage.

The lead didn't last for long as Georgetown grabbed its first lead of the game with a five run bottom of the third. The Hoyas held the 5-3 lead through the fourth, fifth and sixth innings before the WMU offense came to life in the top of the seventh.

It was once again the connection of Grys and Roche that got the Broncos to within one run of the Hoyas as Grys started the scoring rally with a triple to right center field. In the next at-bat, Roche hit a line drive single to centerfield that brought home Grys and cut into the Hoyas lead.

Georgetown once again responded quickly, scoring two in the bottom of the seventh to extend its lead to 7-4.

The Western offense plated one run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by junior Connor Smith center field, but left two runners on base to end the late game threat. Of the 14 total runs scored in the game, six came in the final three innings.
