LCI Win

Women's Golf | March 06, 2018

BLUFFTON, S.C. – The Western Michigan golf team earned its first tournament win since 2011 and the first under second-year head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher as the Broncos claimed the Low Country Invitational on Tuesday.

WMU shot a combined 311 to open the tournament on Monday and sat seven shouts out of first place in a tie for second with Lincoln Memorial. WMU made its move on Tuesday and shot a season-low round of 295 to finish with a 36-hole total of 606 (+38).

"Today we played like we know we can," said Swartout-Mosher. "We stuck to our process both days and that paid off. To have three out of our five golfers place in the top five is great momentum for us moving into the rest of the spring season."

Senior Julia Champion finished as the runner up, shooting a 145 (+3) to miss the medalist spot by just two strokes. Lincoln Memorial's Lise Malherbe finished in first place with a 143 (+1). Champion opened the tournament shooting a 74 and was in fifth place heading into today's final round. The Markham, Ontario, native shot the second-lowest round of the tournament to finish it off, shooting a 71. Champion tied for the tournament with six birdies and had 24 pars, the third-most in the field.

Sophomore Jasmine Chee finished right behind her in third place. Chee shot a 76 to open the tournament and was tied for 10th coming into the final round. Chee charged up the standings after shooting a 72 and ended with a 148 (+6).  Chee finished with five birdies and 22 pars on the day.

Freshman Cameryn Lucia finished tied for fifth place with a 151 (+9). Lucia opened the tournament after shooting a 75 and finished with a 76 in her final round. Lucia had four birdies and 20 pars in her highest individual finish of the season.

All three earned spots on the LCI All-Tournament team.

Junior Claire Hernandez finished with a 162.

The Broncos have a couple weeks off before heading to the John Kirk Panther Invitational, hosted by Georgia State, on March 25-27.
