Softball Sweeps Series with 14-1 Win Saturday at BGSU

Box Score BOWLING GREEN, Ohio- The Western Michigan softball team completed a Mid-American Conference series sweep over Bowling Green with a 14-1 win Saturday. The Broncos took both games of Friday's doubleheader, winning 1-0 and 5-3.

The weekend's results improved Western Michigan's overall record to 17-14, with a 4-2 mark in league play.

WMU outscored the Falcons 20-4 over the three games. The 14 runs scored by the Broncos Saturday tied as the second most by the team this season. It was the fifth time in 2018 producing double-digit runs.

Western Michigan jumped out front early with four runs on four hits in the first inning. Junior Jenna Faultersack belted her second career home run, a three-run blast to right field. Bowling Green (18-15, 1-5 MAC) scored a run in the bottom half off the inning, following a leadoff single, which would stand as BG's only run of the game.

WMU erupted for eight runs in the third to push its lead to 12-1 and added two more runs in the fourth inning before the game was called after five innings with a 14-1 final.

Western Michigan had seven hits in the third inning and eight of nine batters in the lineup reached base. Two players reached base twice in the inning.

Freshman Samantha Coffel batted 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the game. Faultersack drove in four runs and junior Skyler Sobeski went 2-for-2 with a two-run double. Sophomore Mackenzie Swinehart and senior Marlee Wilson each had two hits. Swinehart hit a double for the third straight game. As a team, WMU had 12 hits.

Junior pitcher Jordan Kurth earned the win, holding Bowling Green to one run and two hits over four innings. She struck out four. Freshman Reily Galloway threw the final inning and did not surrender a hit.

The Broncos return to Kalamazoo to host rival Central Michigan in a doubleheader on Tuesday, beginning at 1 p.m.
