Broncos Begin MAC Season With A Pair Of Home Matches This Weekend

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan women's tennis team begins Mid-American Conference play this weekend with two home matches. The Broncos host Northern Illinois on Friday, March 30 at 1 p.m. and Eastern Michigan on Sunday, April 1 with first serve set for 1 p.m. Weather permitting the matches will either take place inside West Hills Athletic Club or outside at Sorensen Courts. Admission to all home tennis matches is free.

The Broncos wrapped up non-conference play with two home victories last week, defeating Wane State and Bradley to improve to 9-7
overall and 7-1 at home this season. Western Michigan was tabbed to finish fourth in the MAC this season by the Preseason Coaches' Poll, which is voted on by the leagues' head coaches. Last season, the Broncos finished 4-4 in the league and earned a six seed at the MAC Tournament.

Northern Illinois heads into Friday with a 5-11 record and an 0-2 mark in the conference after falling to Bowling Green and Miami last weekend. During the last 10 regular season meetings, the Broncos are 9-1 against the Huskies. The Eagles hold a 12-4 overall record and a 1-1 MAC record after defeating Akron before falling to Buffalo 4-3.

Redshirt senior Barbare Eristavi currently holds a seven-match win streak and leads the Broncos with a 10-5 dual match record. Junior Denise Azcui and junior Melina Lyubomirova both are on three-match win streaks and have 9-6 records in dual match play. In doubles, the team of junior Katja Fevralev and Lyubomirova have the most wins at 4-5, which all have occurred at the one spot.

Western Michigan will hit the road following the weekend, traveling to Akron on Friday, April 6 before heading to Buffalo on Sunday, April 8 for a pair of MAC matches.
