STOCKBIRDGE, Ga. – The Western Michigan golf team struggled in the opening round of the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate, hosted by Georgia State, at Eagle's Landing Country Club on Sunday.
WMU shot a combined 333 (+45) on the day and sit in 16th heading into Monday's second round. Jacksonville leads the field after shooting a 299 (+11), with Murray State just three strokes back at 302.
"Today we failed to meet our goal, plain and simple," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "With that adversity comes a lot of learning. Taking what we learned from today will only help us in the next two rounds. We have a lot of golf ahead of us and many more opportunities to be at our best."
Sophomore Jasmine Chee was Western Michigan's top finisher on the day, shooting a 79 (+7) and is one of seven golfers tied for 30th. Winthrop's Ashley Sloup sits at the top of the leaderboard after shooting a 71 (-1). Freshman Cameryn Lucia was WMU's second finisher with an 84 (+12).
The Broncos are back at it for round two on Monday morning. Live results are available via Golfstat.com and on the Golfstat app.
